Ask three people what a website costs in Malaysia and you will get three answers that are thousands of ringgit apart. One says RM300 a year. One says RM5,000. One says they were quoted RM25,000 and walked away.
All three can be right, because "a website" is not one product. It is a bundle of a domain name, a hosting account, the work of building the thing, and a handful of small recurring services. Change who does the building and the total swings by two orders of magnitude — while the parts you rent, the domain and the hosting, barely move at all.
This guide takes the bundle apart. Every cost is listed separately, with the ranges you will realistically see quoted in Malaysia in 2026, so you can build a budget that survives contact with an actual invoice — including the second-year costs that most quotes conveniently leave out.
The Short Answer
If you want a number before the detail, here is the honest version for a small Malaysian business site:
| Approach | First-year total | Ongoing per year |
|---|---|---|
| DIY — you build it yourself on a builder or WordPress | RM250 – RM700 | RM250 – RM700 |
| Freelancer build — someone builds it, you host and run it | RM2,000 – RM6,000 | RM300 – RM1,200 |
| Agency build — custom design, custom features, ongoing support | RM10,000 – RM40,000+ | RM2,000 – RM12,000 |
That is good news if your budget is tight, because labour is the one line item you can substitute your own effort for.
Cost 1: Your Domain Name
Your domain is the address people type. It is rented annually, never bought outright, and it is the cheapest important decision you will make.
In Malaysia you are usually choosing between three families of extension:
| Extension | Typical price per year | Who it suits |
|---|---|---|
.com | Around RM60 – RM70 | Any business, local or international |
.com.my | Around RM85 – RM95 | Malaysian businesses signalling local presence |
.my | Around RM110 – RM130 | Short, premium, distinctly Malaysian branding |
New extensions (.shop, .online, .asia) | RM19 – RM200 first year | Campaigns, side projects, secondary domains |
The .com.my requirement people discover too late
A .com.my domain is not open registration. MYNIC requires proof that you are a registered Malaysian entity — an SSM business registration number for a company or business, or a MyKad for certain individual categories. Registration is manually reviewed, so activation typically takes 2–3 working days rather than the instant activation of a .com.
Budget the time, not just the money. If you are launching around a specific date and have not registered your business with SSM yet, that dependency will bite you. Our .com.my vs .com comparison walks through which one actually fits your business, and the .com.my domain page covers the paperwork.
The renewal trap
This is the single most common way people get surprised by a bill.
Deeply discounted first-year domain prices — RM19 for a .shop, RM29 for an .online — are real, and we run those promotions ourselves. What they are not is the ongoing price. That RM19 .shop renews at close to RM200 a year, because the discount applies to the first registration only.
There is nothing dishonest about it as long as you read it. Before you register anything, look at the renewal column, not the register column, and multiply by the number of years you actually intend to run the site. A .com at a flat rate every year is often cheaper over three years than a novelty extension that costs RM19 today.
Rule of thumb: register your primary domain on an extension whose renewal price you are happy paying forever. Use cheap promotional extensions only for campaigns and redirects.
Cost 2: Web Hosting
Hosting is the server space your site lives on. This is the cost people over-think the most and, in practice, it is rarely the thing that makes or breaks a budget.
Realistic Malaysian ranges in 2026:
| Hosting type | Typical cost | Right for |
|---|---|---|
| Website builder plan | RM150 – RM500 / year | Brochure sites, portfolios, one-page businesses |
| Shared hosting | RM180 – RM550 / year | SMEs, WordPress sites, small stores |
| Managed WordPress hosting | RM220 – RM650 / year | WordPress sites where speed matters |
| VPS hosting | RM200 – RM550 / month | Custom apps, high traffic, full server control |
If you want to see how the options price out against your specific requirements, the website cost calculator lets you adjust websites, platform, storage and purpose and shows the resulting plan, and the hosting recommender asks a few questions and suggests a fit. For a straight comparison of every plan and tier, see the pricing page.
Why the advertised price is not the price you pay
Almost every hosting company in the world, us included, advertises the lowest monthly price — which is the price for prepaying the longest term, usually 36 months. Pay monthly instead and the same plan can cost two to three times more per month.
That is not a trick, it is a volume discount, but it changes how you should read a price tag. Work out the three-year total for each option:
| Billing choice | What you see | What you commit |
|---|---|---|
| 36-month term | Lowest advertised rate | Full amount upfront, best total cost |
| 12-month term | Middle rate | One year upfront, moderate total |
| Monthly | Highest rate | Nothing locked in, highest total cost |
Cost 3: Building the Site
Here is where the budget is actually decided. Three routes, three very different numbers.
DIY with a website builder
RM0 in labour, RM150 – RM500 a year in software.
Drag-and-drop builders — including Cynet's AI website builder, which generates a full site from a description of your business — are the fastest route from nothing to live. A determined non-technical owner can have a presentable five-page business site up in an evening.
The trade-off is ceilings. Builders are excellent at brochure sites and weak at anything unusual, and your site is tied to that builder's platform. For a restaurant, clinic, law firm, or contractor who needs "here is who we are, here is what we do, here is how to reach us" — that ceiling is nowhere near you.
DIY with WordPress
RM0 – RM800 in software, plus your learning time.
WordPress itself is free and open source. Hosting costs the same as above. Where money enters is optional: a premium theme runs roughly RM150 – RM400 one-off, and serious plugins — advanced forms, booking systems, SEO suites, e-commerce extensions — are typically RM200 – RM600 a year each.
Most sites need none of them. It is entirely possible to run a professional WordPress site on free plugins alone. It is also entirely possible to accumulate RM2,000 a year of subscriptions without noticing, one plugin at a time. Keep a list of what renews. Our guide to installing WordPress and setting up your first site covers the free path end to end.
Hiring a freelancer or an agency
RM2,000 – RM40,000+, one-off.
Typical quote ranges you will encounter in Malaysia:
| What you are buying | Typical quote |
|---|---|
| Freelancer, template-based small business site | RM1,500 – RM5,000 |
| Freelancer or small studio, custom design | RM5,000 – RM15,000 |
| Agency, custom design and build | RM15,000 – RM40,000+ |
| E-commerce build with payment and delivery integration | RM8,000 – RM50,000+ |
- Who owns the hosting account and the domain? They must be registered in your name. If a developer registers your domain under their own account, leaving them later is painful.
- What happens after launch? Ask whether updates, backups and fixes are included, for how long, and what they cost afterwards.
- What is the platform? A site built on standard WordPress can be maintained by anyone. A site built on a proprietary in-house system can only be maintained by them.
Cost 4: The Things That Should Not Cost Extra
In 2026, a competent host bundles these. If they appear as separate line items on a quote, ask why:
| Item | What it should cost |
|---|---|
| SSL certificate (the padlock) | Included — free automated certificates are standard |
| Email accounts on your domain | Included with hosting |
| DNS management | Included with the domain |
| Daily backups | Included, with a retention window |
| Migration from another host | Commonly free |
The Costs Most People Forget
These are the ones that turn a RM400 budget into an RM1,400 reality:
- Payment gateway fees. If you sell online, expect a percentage of every transaction plus a small fixed fee, charged by the gateway rather than your host. Check the published rates of whichever gateway you choose — this scales with sales and eventually dwarfs your hosting bill.
- Content and photography. Copywriting and a proper photo shoot are commonly RM500 – RM3,000. Sites launched with placeholder text and phone snapshots usually pay for this later anyway.
- Maintenance. WordPress core, themes and plugins need updating. Either you spend an hour a month, or you pay a retainer of roughly RM150 – RM800 a month.
- Domain renewals for defensive registrations. Registering
.com,.com.myand.myto protect your brand triples that line item every year. - The year-two step up. Discussed next, and the most reliably underestimated cost of all.
Year Two and Beyond
Multi-year prepayment makes year one look cheap and year four look expensive. Introductory hosting rates are tied to the term you bought; when it renews, it renews at the standard rate for whatever term you renew on.
So build a three-year view rather than a launch-day view. A realistic DIY business site looks roughly like this:
| Year | Domain | Hosting | Other | Total |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Year 1 (36-month term prepaid) | RM89 | ~RM540 for 3 years | RM0 – RM300 | RM630 – RM930 |
| Year 2 | RM89 | Covered by prepayment | RM0 – RM300 | RM89 – RM389 |
| Year 3 | RM89 | Covered by prepayment | RM0 – RM300 | RM89 – RM389 |
| Year 4 | RM89 | Renewal at standard rate | RM0 – RM300 | Plan for it |
Where to Spend, Where to Save
Worth paying for:
- The right domain, on an extension you will keep. It is your permanent address and the cheapest thing on this list.
- Backups you have actually tested. Recovering from a bad update costs nothing when a backup exists and can cost your entire site when it does not — see our backup guide.
- A hosting plan with headroom. Being one tier up from your current needs costs a few ringgit a month and prevents the slow-site problem entirely.
- Professional copywriting, if writing is not your strength. It converts visitors better than any design.
- A VPS you do not need yet. Ten times the cost for capacity you are not using.
- Premium plugins that duplicate free ones. Check the free option first; most sites never outgrow it.
- Separate SSL certificates for a standard business site.
- Enormous storage allocations. A typical business site uses a small fraction of even an entry plan.
- A custom-built CMS. You are buying a permanent dependency on one developer.
Wrapping Up
The number that matters is not the launch cost, it is the three-year cost — and once you separate rented infrastructure from human labour, the picture gets clear fast:
- Domain: roughly RM60 – RM120 a year, forever. Check the renewal rate, not the promo rate.
- Hosting: roughly RM180 – RM550 a year for a business site. Longer terms cost less per month but lock you in.
- Building it: RM0 if you do it yourself, RM2,000 – RM40,000+ if someone else does. This is the entire spread.
- Extras: SSL, email, DNS and backups should already be included. Budget separately for content, maintenance and payment gateway fees.
